Arrangement
Arrangement is the way objects are arranged on a page to make it appealing to the audience and organized. Proximity and directionals are two aspects of arrangement.
Proximity is the way objects are grouped together or are placed and it visually helps the person know what to do or to know the message that is trying to be conveyed. For example: An exit signs usually hangs over the door or has an arrow pointing to the direction of a door. It's placement above the door is an example of proximity while if it is using an arrow to point to the door it is an example of a directional.
Directionals are used to visually help a person know where to go or what to do.
Another example of proximity is a stop light. The lights are close together and are grouped in a way that is clear to the driver.

Consistency
Consistency in Visual Literacy is a very important thing. Keeping everything consistent and not changing the make up of an object is what consistency is about. For example a Stop Sign. Like I said before a stop sign can have any language on it, but it a red octagonal sign will always mean stop. Another example is a multiple choice test. Every question should have the same order of ABCD and in how it is arranged.
Attributes of color
Red- Red is a color that generally means stop. It can also mean hot or warm. Color is the feeling of excitement.
Blue- Blue is a color of dependable, cool, calm. Gives the viewer a sense of reliability, trustworthiness, committed, inspiring confidence.
Pink-High energy- seen as energetic, youthful, and create a feeling of movement.
orange-A high arousal color mostly associated with autumn and the sunset.
yellow-In every society, yellow is equated with the splendor and heat of the sun.Warmth, imagination, enlightenment.
brown-Earth color associated with home, substance, and stability.Connected with the earth, (clay, roots, dirt, coffee, leather).
green-Gives the viewer a refreshing and healing feeling. Association with nature. Forests, the grass, plants, and spring.
purple-A complex color preferred by very creative and eccentric types. Sensual and elegant.
White-Purity and simplicity.
Black-Seen as strong and classic. Mysterious. Elegant. Associated with mourning however that attitude has given way to sophistication.

Layout and how it contributes to Visual Literacy
*Humans process images 60,000 times faster than they do text
Alignment, Shape, and Balance are all aspects of layout. How many pictures, the placement of text, and what kind of font used are all elements that are a part of layout.
Serif fonts such as Times New Roman, Garamond, and Georgia are used for print based materials like flyers. Sans-Serif fonts like Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, are easier to read on screens that are projected or on webpages.
The audience are a part of deciding what colors and pictures to use. Children for example might respond better to brighter colors and adults might only need pictures that will aid in explanation.
Balance is to arrange, adjust, and proportion the elements symmetrically. If the layout is balanced it will not be distracting and the message on the page or screen is clearly displayed.
Alignment plays a role in balance. When designing a page it is important that the pictures and texts are aligned in an appropriate way. Most people view things from left to right or top to bottom, however if you are working with those from other countries they may view things right to left or bottom to top.

Color
Color is an important factor in graphic design and visual literacy. It shapes our perceptions and affects our emotions. Most people are familiar with hue through our labeling of three hues as the "primary colors": red, yellow, and blue. These three hues were chosen for rather arbitrary reasons, but their significance is that with any three different hues (red, yellow, and blue work well), one can create any other color by mixing light of these three hues. Painters have these three hues as their "primary colors" because it is easy to get very saturated versions of these hues in paint, and with them they can mix paints of other hues.
